This post highlights some more fatal issues and mistakes that we must avoid while optimizing a website. Here are they:

1. Non-SEO friendly website structure

In order to achieve good search engine visibility and before starting any SEO campaign, website must be coded cleanly according to search engine guidelines and parameters.

2. Using Javascript, Silverlight or Flash for site navigation

Search engine spiders are blind to Javascripts, flash, silverlight or any other RIA platform till date. Any navigation/menu system done purely in Javascript/flash/silverlight is a disaster because search engines will not see those links and therefore your listings on search engines will be very very limited.

3. No Keyword research or Wrong keyword selection

This is the most common mistake we often see. Many website owners/webmasters put very little or no effort at all to perform research into the keywords for which they should rank highly.

we have also seen many many businesses target key phrases that are far too competitive, such as single word keywords, which are difficult to rank well for, especially for newly developed websites. Newbie SEO practitioners will also try and place lots of keywords and key phrases all on one page in an attempt to rank highly for all of them.

With all core ecommerce website SEO requirements and recommendations, I have prepared the following SEO checklist that will help you optimize your ecommerce website to rank high on search engines:

• Product Keywords – These are words/phrases that appear in the content of your site. Brainstorm a list of words that you would search if looking for your product. You can use the free Google Adwords keyword tool (https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal). Use the keywords often in the text of your site (2-4% density), but do not obviously overuse them, or the search engine will treat them as spam.

• Research – Though not a tool in and of itself, research will tell you if you are on the correct path. Once you determine your keywords, run a search for each keyword or phrase to see if the content of the pages (product pages) generated matches the content of your page. If not, try new keywords until you are confident that consumers searching for your product will find your ecommerce website easily.

• Code to Text Ratio – Search engines like Google calculate the percentage of text that appears
on a web page in order to determine whether or not that page is relevant to the requested search query by the user. A higher text ratio places a page higher in rank. Search engines prefer text to images, and prefer HTML to other formats.

• Titles – Make your page title descriptive as this title will appear as the link on the search result page when the search engine returns its results to the consumer. Keep your title interesting, keep it to the point of your site/products, and keep it brief and concise – no more than five to eight words (65 chars). It’s recommended to use keywords in the page title. Title each document on the site appropriately so that they will be searchable by keywords pertaining to the content of the site. Also avoid title duplicity across the website.

• Meta Tags – Meta tags are also one of the most important SEO element for your website. While some search engines now ignore keyword Meta tags, many use the description meta tag to elaborate on the title. Use keyword rich Meta description to explain the content of your webpage.

• Image Tags – As search engines can’t read the images, use Image “Alt Tags” to specify an alternate text for an image. This tag will be read as text to search engines instead of images (increasing your code to text ratio), and should contain your keywords.

• Internal Linking – Make sure that all your important product pages and categories are linked from the Home page of your website. Link these pages within your site using keywords and phrases. Search engine use these internal links to crawl the internal pages of the website. Such links will increase the natural usage of the keywords on your site, and generate more interest in your site.

• HTML Site Maps – Site maps were initially used to enable visitors to navigate a site with ease. Now they also help to increase the crawability of a website. The sitemap should be simple; keyword rich, and link to every page within the site.

• Frames – Do not use frames on your site. Do not put your products in Frame. The search engine may see the frame only and ignore any of the text contained within the frame.

Keyword Density and Its Impact on Website Rankings

Boosting Your Sites Keyword Density

Your sites keyword density is one criteria that search engines will
judge your site on when deciding where to index you on a per
search-term basis. Keyword density refers to the number of times a
keyword appears through a particular page on your web site. Using
our top 5 keywords from the Overtuffre term suggestion tool, we can
boost the keyword density of our web site in 4 ways:

• Keyword placement in the <title> tag
• <h1> and <h2> tags to emphasize keywords
• Naming your web site and pages with keywords
• Incorporating keywords into body text

Let’s now take a look at each of these methods in more detail.

Note: Make sure you have your top 5 keywords handy.

Keyword Placement in the <title> Tag

Overall, we are aiming for a 10% keyword density per page on
your web site. That means that for every page on your web site,
you need to incorporate your top 5 keywords / phrases to achieve a
10% keyword density.

When a web page is chosen by Google as a match to a search term,
the title and first few lines of “readable” text are shown from that
web site in Google’s results. Google also weighs these two pieces
of text highly when calculating the relevance of your web site.

We will use your top 5 keywords / phrases to construct your title
tags. Notice how I said “title tags” and not title tag. Each page on
your web site needs to have a different, slightly reworded title tag
that uses some of your top 5 keywords in each one. As you will
soon see, each title tag also needs to relate to that pages name and
heading tags to create the ideal keyword density.

Let’s say that I run a web site about those baby names again. Here
were my top 5 keywords / phrases:

baby name
baby girl name
baby boy name
odd baby name
top 100 baby name

Let’s also say that my site has 4 pages:

• A home page
• A page about baby names
• A services page
• A “fast facts” page

I would need 4 differently worded page titles. Using my keywords
and the “no more than 40 characters in a title” rule, here’s what I
came up with:

Title #1: Baby names
Title #2: baby girl names and baby boy names
Title #3: Baby name services
Title #4: What are the top 100 baby names?

In each of the titles I’ve underlined where my top 5 keywords /
phrases are. Notice how every title is different, yet between them
they contain a mix and match of every one of my 5 keywords /
phrases?

There are two tips which I will stress when creating the content of
your title tags:

a. Use every single one of your top 5 keywords in various mix-
and-match combinations through each of your web pages title
tags
b. Keep the length of each titles text under 40 characters

So, take what I’ve just told you and write down title descriptions
for each page on your web site. Once you’ve done that, place the
descriptions between the "title" and "/title" tags in each of your
pages.

For example, if one of my web pages looked like this:

then I would change the highlighted text to reflect my new page
title description,

One of the best ways to check the effectiveness of the phrasing of
your keywords is to compare them to those of your competitors.
Use Google to search for one of your top 5 keywords / phrases.
Look at how the top 5 ranked search results word their titles. Are
you using your keywords in a similar fashion? Maybe you could
rearrange a word or two? Analyze these results and make sure your
web page titles are the same -– if not better –- than those of your
competitors.

Heading tags have been used for years in HTML to improve the
formatting of a particular word or sentence on a web page.
Heading tags range from (bigger text, signifying more
importance) to
<h1> <h2> <h3> <h4> <h5> <h6> <h7>

(signifying least importance).

Headings tags are generally used to emphasize a page or paragraph heading to search engines for importance. You should stick to only <h1> and <h2> tags.

Top Ten Most Important SEO Factors for website Ranking:

1. Title Tag
This is what appears in the blue bar at the top of your browser, it comes from a metatag called "title". As well as being used as a pure factor in SERP, it also boosts rank in other ways. Some
engines use “click-through” rates as a factor. Sites where the title closely matches the content tend to get better click-throughs (searchers see its not a spam site). When words in the title are also used as anchor text in a link to the page, you get more benefit.

2. Anchor Text of Links
The phrasing, terms, order and length of a link's anchor text is one of the largest factors taken into account by the major search engines for ranking. Specific anchor text links help a site to rank better for that particular term/phrase at the search engines. In other words, it’s the actual text that represents the link on a web page.

3. Keyword Use in Document Text
Your keywords must appear in the actual copy of the page. Supposedly search engines pay more attention to the first and last paragraphs. The way to go about this is have your keywords firmly
in your mind as you write your copy. I don’t know about you, but I find this really hard. I prefer a different approach. There is a simple trick here, write your quality content, then use a
keyword density tool to find the keyword density. THEN, take the top words and add them to the meta keywords tag for that page. This is somewhat backwards for some maybe, it optimizes a page for what you actually wrote, rather than trying to write a page optimized for certain words. I find I get much better correlation like this and can then tweak my text afterwards.
Sure, if you want to you can further optimize by having the keywords in header tags and bold etc. As a guide, these might contribute only a few percent to the SERP

4. Accessibility of Document
“Accessibility is anything on the page that impedes a search engine
spider’s ability to crawl a page. There can be a number of
culprits:”

• Avoid Splash Pages: Flash and heavily graphic introductions prohibit engines from crawling your site.
• Avoid Frames: Never use pages with frames. Frames are too complex for the crawlers and too cumbersome to index.
• Avoid Cookies: Never require cookies for Web site access! Search engine crawlers are unable to enter any cookierequired materials.
• Avoid JavaScript when Possible: Though JavaScript menus are very popular, they disable crawlers from accessing those links. Most, well-indexed Web sites incorporate textbased
links primarily because they are search engine friendly. If necessary, JavaScript should be referenced externally.
• Avoid Redirects: Search engines frown upon companies that use numerous Web sites to redirect to a single Website.
• Avoid Internal Dynamic URLs on the Home page: Though many sites incorporate internal dynamic links, they should not incorporate those links on the home page. Engine crawlers are currently ill-equipped to navigate dynamic links - which often pass numerous parameters using
excessive characters.
• Utilize Your Error Pages: Too often companies forget about error pages (such as 404 errors). Error pages should always re-direct "lost" users to valuable, text-based pages.
Placing text links to major site pages is an excellent practice. Visit www.cnet.com/error for an example of a well-utilized error page.

5. Links to Document from Site-Internal Pages
Even more important than the holy grail of external links is internal links. Who knew! Easily the most underrated criteria. But, it’s important to make sure you are making good use of anchor text. A well-linked to document is considered more important than an obscure page, even if the links are coming from the site itself.

6. Primary Subject Matter of Site
What your website is about is determined through analysis of the content. It’s critical that it correlates to keywords, anchor text, etc. One strange off shoot of this is perhaps it’s not worth spending much effort trying to build the page rank of the home page. This strange concept is explained in the idea of Search Engine Theme Pyramids. A related factor is having a good sitemap. Not only is it good spider food, you can also load it with lots of quality anchor text for
those internal links as well as relevancy text (that which appears near a link). Also important is the invisible Google sitemap which is an xml file for the Google spider only.

7. External Links to Linking Pages
These are the links from other sites to you. Note it’s much better to have specific pages linked rather than your homepage because of the idea of Search Engine Theme Pyramids. Don’t bother with link farms or anything you see advertised for a link. You are much better off finding links from sites that have similar topics as yourself.

8. Link Popularity of Site in Topical Community
The search engine is trying to figure out what your page is about, so it can decide if it’s relevant to a users search. Links from pages with similar topics add credence to your page. When trying to search out those links you can use something like WebFerret. Or if you just want a quick method, use the “related:” tag in Google, e.g. type “related:www.yahoo.com” in and it will search for sites related to the topic of Yahoo (whatever that is?). Then spend some time emailing webmasters and asking for links. There is software out there that will do this automatically for you.

9. Global Link Popularity of Site
This means that links from sites that are “important” (i.e. have a high SERP) are more valued than those from a lower SERP. A factor worth considering when searching out links, get the ones from sites with a high page rank first.

10. Keyword Spamming
Careful, this is a negative factor!! This means having a keyword density in text or tags so high that the engine decides you are stuffing. Your rank will go from #1 to #10000 in a heartbeat. Want to know the best part? No-one actually knows what percent density this is, and it’s probably different for different engines! Between you and me, I am not going above 10% on my pages.

Importance of Keywords in the Website

Keywords are what drives search engines. The idea is that a search engine wants to return a page in a search about something that the searcher is looking for. It’s doing this by looking at what was entered into the search box (the keywords) and then trying to match those keywords with pages in its database.

What is Key Phrase?
A Key Phrase is just a few keywords together. Researchers tell us that very few people just use one word to search any more and are getting more sophisticated.

Imagine you are a potential visitor to your site. What keywords or phrases will you type in to find it? Take a blank piece of paper. Now, on your piece of paper, write down as many words or
phrases as you can that you as a potential visitor would search for to find a site like yours in a search engine.

Here’s an example. For a site about baby names you might have:
• Baby names
• Popular baby names
• Most popular baby names

Notice how I didn’t use “baby”. People that are searching on that term might be looking for who knows. At this point we don’t want to be too general.

Try to write 20 to 30 keywords or phrases on your piece of paper. If you’re having trouble coming up with keywords, ask your partner, friends or family members which keywords they would use to find your site. At this point you should have a list of no less than 20 keywords or phrases at your disposal.

Right, now we need to do some research. We need to find out how many people are searching for our keywords and phrases. What we need now is a tool to tell us this information. The big gun here is something called Wordtracker. It costs just under $10 for a 3 day subscription, but the information it gives is worth it. If your site depends on traffic, then I recommend this tool.

Two other free tools work also, but just don’t give the detail.

I use these almost on a daily basis. It allows you to find out which keywords people are using in their searches, which as I’m sure you will agree is very valuable information!
The digitalpoint tool actual includes data from Overture, so if you are only going to use one tool, use that one. Start at the top of your keyword list that you wrote earlier and
enter each one into the text box. As you can see, the term suggestion tool returns a list of keywords and how many times they were searched for during the last day. As you type each of
your keywords into the text box and see the number of searches, write that number down next to your keyword on the page.

As you are doing this, you’ll also come across key phrases that people are searching on that you didn’t think of. Include them too. You should now have a list of keywords with the number of
searches for that keyword from last month on your page. To get the 5 most popular keywords, simply take the 5 keywords with the highest number of searches. Write them down in order of most to least popular. You should now have your list of 5 popular
keywords, maybe something like this:

63222 baby boy name
38285 odd baby name
33583 top 100 baby name

Next we need to get an idea of the competition. Go to Google and enter in your first key phrase in quotes. Like this..
“baby name”

Looking at the right of the Google search, you’ll see what the
competition is:

Not bad, only 3.2 million sites we have to beat. Well, you didn’t think this would be easy did you?
Take your search terms and for the ones you have narrowed down to find out your competition and add that as a 3rd column. Make sure you remember to search in quotes, that looks for these word as a phase rather than just anywhere. These keywords are going to form the basis for all of your site optimization strategies.

An Introduction to Google

Google is “the” Internet search engine. Over 150 million searches are conducted daily. Between Google, Yahoo and Bing, these three account for about 90% of all searches made on the web.
As stated in the first paragraph, over 160 million searches are conducted every day with Google. Even if your business or product is currently listed on Google, do you think that a boost in ranking to the 1st or 2nd page would increase the number of
potential customers coming to your web site?

How Does Google Calculate Page Relevance?

Although I don’t know how the Google algorithm works exactly, no-one does, it’s a closely guarded secret, I do know that Google relies on 118 different calculations to workout the relevancy of any particular page for a search, the big one is link popularity...

Link Popularity
If you have downloaded the Google toolbar, then you will have seen the green bar that Google uses to rank every site you visit. This ranking is Google’s PageRank, and is indicated on a scale of 1 to 10. Generally, sites with a PageRank of 7-10 are considered excellent in terms of quality and popularity.
But how is this rank calculated? Quite simply actually. Google’s main criteria for the calculation of relevancy for a page is based on the number of web sites that link back to that particular site.
However, having 100,000 web sites linking back to your site will not necessarily mean that you will attain a PageRank of 10. Each site that links back to you must in itself contain quality content and have a high (7-10) PageRank for it to impact positively on the PageRank of your web site. Yes, sites with a poor PageRank can bring your sites PageRank down.

If Google’s PageRank technology sounds confusing, just try and remember that Google’s PageRank is the #1 criterion for calculating the relevancy of any web page in relation to the
specified search term.

Following are some of the important google guidelines, tips and tricks that can be employed while dealing with Google:

Google Recommended:
• A website should have crystal clear hierarchy and links and should preferably be easy to navigate.
• A site map is required to help the users go around yoursite and in case the site map has more than 100 links,then it is advisable to break it into several pages to avoid clutter.
• Come up with essential and precise keywords and make sure that your website features relevant and informative content.
• The Google crawler will not recognize text hidden in the images, so when describing important names, keywords or links; stick with plain text.
• The TITLE and ALT tags should be descriptive and accurate and the website should have no broken links or incorrect HTML.
Dynamic pages (the URL consisting of a ‘?’ character) should be kept to a minimum as not every search engine spider is able to crawl them.
• The robots.txt file on your web server should be current and should not block the Googlebot crawler. This file tells crawlers which directories can or cannot be
crawled.

Google NOT Recommended:
• When making a site, do not cheat your users, i.e. those people who will surf your website. Do not provide them with irrelevant content or present them with any
fraudulent schemes.
• Avoid tricks or link schemes designed to increase your site's ranking.
• Do not employ hidden texts or hidden links.
• Google frowns upon websites using cloaking technique. Hence, it is advisable to avoid that.
• Automated queries should not be sent to Google.
• Avoid stuffing pages with irrelevant words and content. Also don't create multiple pages, subdomains, or domains with significantly duplicate content.
• Avoid "doorway" pages created just for search engines
or other "cookie cutter" approaches such as affiliate programs with hardly any original content.

Google has a comprehensive and highly developed technology, a straightforward interface and a wide-ranging array of search tools which enable the users to easily access a variety of information online. Google users can browse the web and find information in various languages, retrieve maps, stock quotes and read news, search for a long lost friend using the phonebook listings available on Google for all of US cities and basically surf the 3 billion odd web pages on the internet!

Google boasts of having world’s largest archive of Usenet messages, dating all the way back to 1981. Google’s technology can be accessed from any conventional desktop PC as well as from various wireless platforms such as WAP and i-mode phones, handheld devices and other such Internet equipped gadgets.

The web search technology offered by Google is often the technology of choice of the world’s leading portals and websites. It has also benefited the advertisers with its unique advertising program that does not hamper the web surfing experience of its users but still brings revenues to the advertisers.

Google’s Web Search Technology

When you search for a particular keyword or a phrase, most of the search engines return a list of page in order of thenumber of times the keyword or phrase appears on the website. Google web search technology involves the use of its indigenously designed PageRank Technology and hypertextmatching analysis which makes several instantaneous calculations undertaken
without any human intervention. Google’s structural design also expands simultaneously as the
internet expands.

PageRank technology

PageRank technology involves the use of an equation which comprises of millions of variables and terms and determines a
factual measurement of the significance of web pages and is calculated by solving an equation of 500 million variables and
more than 3 billion terms. Unlike some other search engines, Google does not calculate links but utilizes the extensive link structure of the web as an organizational tool. When the link to a Page, lets say Page B is clicked from a Page A, then that click is attributed as a vote towards Page B on behalf of Page A.

Quintessentially, Google calculates the importance of a page by the number of such ‘votes’ it receives. Not only that, Google also assesses the importance of the pages that are involved in the voting process. Consequently, pages that are themselves ahead in ranking and are important in that way also help to make other pages important. One thing to note here is that Google’s technology does not involve human intervention in anyway and uses the inherent intelligence of
the internet and its resources to determine the ranking and importance of any page.

Hypertext-Matching Analysis: Unlike its conventional counterparts, Google is a search engine which is hypertextbased. This means that it analyzes all the content on each web page and factors in fonts, subdivisions, and the exact positions of all terms on the page. Not only that, Google also evaluates the content of its nearest web pages. This policy of not disregarding any subject matter pays off in the end and enables Google to return results that are closest to user
queries..

Query-handling – The Google Way Google has a very simple 3-step procedure in handling a
query submitted in its search box.
1. When the query is submitted and the enter key is
pressed, the web server sends the query to the index
servers. Index server is exactly what its name suggests; it consists of an index much like the index of a book which displays where is the particular page
containing the queried term is located in the entire
book.
2. After this, the query proceeds to the doc servers, and these servers actually retrieve the stored documents. Page descriptions or “snippets” are then generated to suitably describe each search result.
3. These results are then returned to the user in less than a second!

The Google Dance

Approximately once a month, Google update their index by recalculating the Pageranks of each of the web pages that they have crawled. The period during the update is known as the Google dance. Because of the nature of PageRank, the calculations need to
be performed about 40 times and, because the index is so large, the calculations take several days to complete. During this period, the search results fluctuate; sometimes minuteby minute. It is because of these fluctuations that the term, Google Dance, was coined. The dance usually takes place
sometime during the last third of each month.

Google has two other servers that can be used for searching. The search results on them also change during the monthly update and they are part of the Google dance. For the rest of the month, fluctuations sometimes occur in the search results, but they should not be confused with the actual dance. They are due to Google's fresh crawl and to
what is known "Everflux". Google has two other searchable servers apart from www.google.com. They are www2.google.com and www3.google.com. Most of the time, the results on all 3 servers are the same, but during the dance, they are different.

For most of the dance, the rankings that can be seen on www2 and www3 are the new rankings that will transfer to www when the dance is over. Even though the calculations are done about 40 times, the final rankings can be seen from very early on. This is because, during the first few iterations, the calculated figures merge to being close to their final
figures.

You can see this with the Pagerank Calculator by checking the Data box and performing some calculations. After the first few iterations the search results on www2 and www3 may still
change, but only slightly.

During the dance, the results from www2 and www3 will sometimes show on the www server, but only briefly. Also, new results on www2 and www3 can disappear for short periods. At the end of the dance, the results on www will match those on www2 and www3. This Google Dance Tool allows you to check your rankings on www, www2 and www3 and on all 9 datacenters
simultaneously.

NEED VS. RISK

The first question you should ask yourself when changing domain names is:

> Do I really need to change domain names?
> No really... REALLY?? Is this the brilliant brain-child of some marketing exec who
has no clue of how the Internet works?

Most domain name changes come about due to business reasons. If the reason
for a name change is weak, and the previous domain is strong, or a lot of your
business relies on search engines, tell your boss (or yourself):

> Rankings are inevitably going to drop temporarily
> Chances are when rankings return, they won’t be as strong as they were before
> There is a fair amount of work involved
> There is a fair amount of risk that work won’t be done right
> If it’s not done right rankings might tank for months and months

THE NATURE OF THE MOVE

Moving’ your site could mean a number of things:

> Shifting to a new domain and transferring all content
> Shifting to a new domain and transferring partial content
> Splitting off some content to a new domain for PR or marketing purposes
> Shifting to a new domain and changing URI structure
> Shifting to a new domain and changing content

In each case the process as a whole is similar, but the details of how you deal with
the content shift will be different. The difference come into play when deploying
301 redirects to the new site. Another panellist will describe 301 shortly.

WHAT TO EXPECT?

Indexing time for a new domain after the old site has been redirected:

> Google – Expect a delay of approximately one month for indexing
> Yahoo – Expect indexing between one to three months
> MSN – Expect quite quick indexing, in less than one month

Time expected to achieve competitive rankings:

> Google – Expect a delay between two and four months (could be more)
> Yahoo – Expect a delay of approx one month
> MSN – Expect a delay of approx one month

Both of these variables are dependent upon link acquisition – new domains that
acquire new strong links early will see quicker indexing and return of rankings

REGISTERING THE NEW DOMAIN

When registering a new domain, always:

> Ensure the domain is entirely new, or if it was registered previously that it did not
host questionable content (use Archive.org)
> Ensure that the IP address you will be hosted on is either exclusive, or does not
host any sites which contain questionable content
(Use: http://www.seoegghead.com/tools/what-is-hosted-on-that-ip.seo )

Some recommend registering your new domain for more than two years, and using the same registrant details as the previous, established domain, to avoid any issue.

Rand Fishkin of SEOMoz recommends publically stating the intention to move on
Google Group’s Webmaster Central forum, where you can go back to complain if
Google is not quick to recognize the new domain.

THE MOVE

> Before any content is moved to the new domain, temporarily block search
engines from indexing with Robots.txt:
User Agent: *
Disallow: /

> Ensure both old and new domains are registered and verified with Google
Webmaster Tools
> Ensure both old and new sites have complete XML sitemaps submitted and
verified in Google Webmaster Tools
> Move the content to the new domain – Caveats for databases, as discussed in
the previous presentation
> Set 301 redirects from old domain to new, as discussed in detail in the
presentation following this one
> At the same time the 301s go live, remove the Robots.txt block on crawlers

POST MOVE

There are some things you can do to smooth the transition:

> Examine your top referring sites via your analytics package – contact the site
owners of your biggest referrers and ask them to update their links
> Examine your backlinks with Yahoo Site Explorer and ask as many
webmasters as possible to update their links
> Launch the new domain with a bang:
- Press releases, press mentions
- Linkbait and publicity
- As many new, powerful links as possible
> Maintain the old site and 301 redirects for an extended period – ensure at a
minimum that Google, MSN and Yahoo have crawled your entire new site and the
old site is no longer in the index. The longer the better for bookmarks and backlinks

Description Google created for this file, “Page 1. Page 2. Page 3. Page 4. Page 5. Page 6. Page 7. Page 8. Page 9.” This happened because there was no text in the PDF that Google could read and index. Google could not read the text in the PDF so it could not create a more meaningful description.

This listing is not going to help “entice” people to click-trough to this document

and it will not help this document rank better unless somebody is searching on PDF or Page 1. or Page 2. etc – Sidebar: There were over 200,000 results for this search in Google - "Page 1. Page 2." Pdf. Hence will not entice people to click through.

Optimize the text in the Document

Optimize - If you are writing or editing the document that will become an online PDF you should optimize it just like a regular HTML Page and include important keyword phrases in the body and headlines etc.

Pay specialize attention to the first Headline as it may be extracted by search engines to be used in the search engine listings (more on this later in the section on Document Titles)

Meta tags are tags, which are embedded in the HTML code of a page, You should insert the META tag element at the top of your document, just after the "title" element.

The basic syntax for Meta Tags is:

Write it in sentence structure.
Should be relevant to the similar 25-30 word (under 150 characters) description of the first text within the visible page.

Minimize the use of "stop words" such as "and, the, of".
Keyword phrases that appear earliest in the Meta description will generally receive higher ranking value.
Try to include this tag in all pages by describing the content and it should be unique.
Don't load your Meta description with only keywords.
Strive for 6%-20% keyword density.
Use different Meta description tag for each pages.

Website Body Text Optimization

Contents are the key to success in Search Engine Rankings! So its most important to tweak the content of the website so that Search Engine Spiders can count them for rankings.

Following are some Tips to Optimize the Body Text of your Website:

Keyword prominence: Make sure to put the most important keywords into a carefully crafted paragraph at the beginning of your HTML page. Prominence is how close to the start of the area that the keyword appears. In general, a keyword that appears closer to the top of the page or area will be more relevant.
Keyword Density: If the page contains less than 500 words, keeping 1%-3% of those words is better. If the page contains more than 500 words, keep 3%-5% of the overall content.
Try to provide a minimum word count of 250 and a maximum of 750 words on each page.
Use CSS instead of "font" tags.
Get rid of the java script in the code and put it in an external file.
Avoid image buttons, Javascript links and keep it as pure text links.
Use heading tags:

Most search engines dictates the h1, h2, h3 tags and if you are using these, the text in between this tags must be more important.

By default Heading tags are not prettiest in terms of formatting, but you can override the default look by using CSS. See the exammple of stylesheet below:

Note that placing more than 75 characters in these tags are not a good idea!!

Repeat the page "title" in a heading at the top of the page if possible. in a heading at the top of the page if possible.
Keyword proximity: It refers to the closeness between two or more keywords. Always try to group words together that might be searched on as a single phrase by a user.
(eg: Use "home loans" instead of "home mortgage loans" assuming that a user searching only for the phrase "home loans".)
Place some important keywords in Bold or Italic.
Use 'Alt' tag to describe the image.
ALT tag defines the text to display for a image if the user has graphics turned off, or if they put the cursor over it in Internet Explorer. Some search engines including google will look for keywords in the ALT tags.

Insert comments tag in your page, it is hidden and not visible to the user. A couple of search engines will read this text, so you may wish to include keywords in these tags.

Make sure the code of home page is not bigger than 32K
Try to keep font size to a minimum of size 11px or 12px (2 or 3 in DreamWeaver)
Try to avoid using nested loops in "table" structure because its hard for the search engines to read the Tables.
Use W3C technologies and guidelines.
Try to target two or three main keywords for a website.
Avoid listing the same word multiple times in a row.
Update your body text at regular intervals.
(Many of the major search engines prefer to give importance to websites, which updated its contents at regular intervals.)

In order to accomplish above mentioned tasks follow the following things:
1. Check you run Apache
• To check this go to administration > Help > System Info.
• Server type should be listed next to Web Server. Please note that SEF will not run on IIS.
2. Your server must allow .htaccess override

3. Set $mosConfig_sef= “1″ in configuration.php
You can also activate SEF under Site > Global Configuration.

4. Rename htaccess.txt to .htaccess
This can be done via FTP. Note the dot in the beginning.

B. Install The sh404SEF Component
The sh404SEF Plugin makes Joomla SEO easy. Just Install the Joomla sh404SEF Plugin (or rather ‘Component’) by siliana.com and Install it via Install Extension available in Joomla.

C. Make Joomla URLS SEO Friendly

Many people fail to place their keywords in their title tags - in fact, this is the biggest optimization mistake. You don't have to put all your keywords in every page's title, just put in the ones that are relevant to that specific page. Also make sure to keep your page title within 60-70 char(With spaces).
On your main (home) page, focus on the core/seed keywords that reflect the overall theme of your site.

2. Internal Linking Structure: Link to all of your subpages/inner pages from the home page.
There may be times when this seems impractical but there are usually unobtrusive ways to do it. By having links to all of your sub-pages you provide the means by which a search engine can find the various pages on your site whenever they visit your "home" page.
Ideally the spider should be able to access every page on your site by clicking on a series of links.
